# PadReset

> Free guide to reset the Epson waste ink pad counter with open-source software. A product of [Imprímelo 247](https://imprimelo247.com), a studio in formation; the site is operated by [Dante S. González](https://www.linkedin.com/in/dante-s-gonzalez/), who works in the printing trade and answers for the guide and the links published here. Not affiliated with Seiko Epson Corporation.

Resetting the counter does not clean or replace the physical pad. Do physical maintenance first. Some Epson models also store waste-ink life on a maintenance-box chip; the software linked here cannot reset that chip. PadReset is a directory and guide; the recommended app is Epson Reset (yusnel-rojas), downloaded from its official GitHub releases.

An agent can prepare a waste-ink reset safely; a person runs the write.

1. Physical maintenance first (wash, replace or reroute the pad). A reset only erases the counter, never the ink.
2. Read-only: enumerate the printer over USB, read the counters, save and hash the EEPROM backup.
3. Sanity check: if the pad counter sits far below its limit, a reset buys nothing — it makes the counter lie until the next lock.
4. Simulate the write (dry run) and hand the exact command to the human.
5. After the human runs the write and does a full power cycle (off, 10 s, on), read again and compare against what was going to be written.

Rules and limits: USB only (no network path); the human runs both the write and the power cycle; backups stay on the local machine, with no telemetry. PadReset has tested this sequence on two printer models, an L365 and an L6490 (the second with no readable pad counter), and on 2026-10-02 ran the full cycle —final write included— on an L365 at 100%: EWR wrote, the power cycle held, and the byte-for-byte check against the backup came back applied. The write is still left to a person, on purpose: it is the only irreversible step.

PadReset publishes a read-only harness that drives this sequence: https://padreset.com/agent/ewr-safe.mjs — one Node file, no install, no dependencies, with its .sha256 next to it. It cannot write: the write flags do not exist in it, only read, backup, dry run and verify. The app that talks to the printer is third-party and listed on the download page; EWR (RxNaison) is the CLI one it drives. Usage: `curl -fsSLO https://padreset.com/agent/ewr-safe.mjs` then `node ewr-safe.mjs inspect --model <model>` (add `--ewr <path>` if the EWR executable is not in the current directory or PATH). After `prepare`, `node ewr-safe.mjs share --plan ./padreset-out/ewr-plan.json` packs the plan, the EEPROM backup and the traces into one `ewr-share.json` with the printer serial, the user paths and the host USB port redacted, so a run can be sent to someone else — or asked of a different printer model — without exchanging personal data; the harness refuses to write the file if anything identifiable would survive. Details in the [guide section on agents](https://padreset.com/en/guide/#agents).

Every binary on the download page is pinned to a release tag and published with its SHA-256: https://padreset.com/SHA256SUMS.txt lists them all in `sha256sum -c` format — `hash filename`, with the filename the browser saves — and each row links the public VirusTotal report for that hash. The project re-checks those bytes against the published hashes every week, and verifies the build-provenance attestation on the same downloaded bytes where the upstream release publishes one, so an asset that changes inside its release shows up as a failure instead of as a hash that quietly stopped being true. Each hash is shown with the date it was last checked — in the download table, on every VirusTotal link, and on every line of the download page's markdown — and the hash list is published next to the oldest of those dates, so no hash is read as checked by itself. Where the upstream release publishes a build-provenance attestation (EWR since v1.4.1, Epson Reset since v1.0.3), the download page also documents how to check the archive against it with the GitHub CLI (`gh attestation verify`) — a layer on top of the published hash, not a replacement for it.

Agent tooling that consumes Agent Skills Discovery (RFC v0.2.0) finds the same workflow at https://padreset.com/.well-known/agent-skills/index.json: the skill `epson-waste-reset`, with the SHA-256 of the file served, so it can be verified before being read.

The four lists below are the same nine pages in each language, with translated slugs; each label is written in its own language, as the site does. Every link points at the markdown version of the page (`index.md`): its header carries the HTML URL, which is the canonical one to cite.
